UTAH REPUBLICANS IN DISARRAY ON HOW TO CONFRONT INSURRECTION THAT HAPPENED IN BROAD DAYLIGHT

SALT LAKE CITY, May 20th, 2021 — Yesterday, the United States House of Representatives took a crucial step towards accountability for the January 6th Capitol Insurrection, by voting to create an independent commission on the acts of right-wing extremist violence that occurred upon our seat of government in Washington, DC. But rather than stand united behind facts and a desire for truth, Utah Representatives Chris Stewart and Burgess Owens opted instead to side with the conspiracy theories and Donald Trump’s “Big Lie,” voting against the commission.

“Four months ago, Chris Stewart and Burgess Owens fanned the flames of false election fraud when they objected to President Biden’s victory in the 2020 election — they haven’t learned from their mistakes.” said Utah Democratic Party Chair Jeff Merchant. “Actions speak louder than words and yesterday, Representatives Stewart and Owens showed that they have not wavered from their agenda of undermining democracy and catering to the far-right. Instead of taking steps to ensure accountability for an attack on  American democracy, Chris Stewart and Burgess Owens chose to reject reality and prevent the American people from learning the whole truth about what happened on January 6th.

Utahns should be able to look to their leaders with confidence, and know that they are working in their best interest. Instead, these members of the Utah delegation put partisan politics above Utahns. Utah Democrats know that our state deserves better.

The Utah Democratic Party is the face and voice of Democrats in the State of Utah. We believe that Utahns deserve strong, competent leadership that puts the people and democracy first.
