A BAD BILL GETS EVEN WORSE: UTAH DEMOCRATS STAND WITH TRANS YOUTH AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS AGAINST EXTREMIST ATTACKS
SALT LAKE CITY, January 26, 2023 — Today, the Utah House passed SB 16, 4th substitute. This version is even more extreme than the original, targeting trans youth and weighing punitive action against medical professionals in pursuit of the Republicans’ radical agenda of government control.
What was added to the bill in the fourth substitute? Changing the moratorium on hormones and puberty blockers to an all-out ban without expiration, making the bill effective immediately with the Governor’s signature, and allowing those who have consented to and received treatment in the past to retroactively revoke their consent and bring a lawsuit against their care provider.
“SB 16 is a prime example of the dangerous extremism in the Republican supermajority, using the power of the legislature to ban life-saving healthcare for trans youth and retroactively change the rules to punish medical professionals for doing their jobs,” said Diane Lewis, Utah Democratic Party Chair. “The supermajority’s disturbing pattern of government overreach continues.”
