Utah GOP Asks LDS Volunteers to Choose Between Faith and Politics

September 25, 2024, Salt Lake City - UDP Vice-Chair Oscar Mata released the following statement today:

“I am deeply disappointed in the Utah GOP’s decision to recruit volunteers to canvass for Donald Trump over General Conference weekend. As a member of the LDS church myself,  I find it disrespectful to ask LDS volunteers to choose between an important faith event and politics. Unlike the Utah GOP, the Utah Democratic Party is scheduling our canvasses and phone banks around General Conference sessions to accommodate our LDS supporters.

It’s clear that Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies are worried about losing the LDS vote. From being found liable for sexual assault in civil court to his policy of separating children from their parents at the border, Donald Trump does not embody the values of being ‘honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men,’ as the 13th Article of Faith says.

If you are an LDS voter who feels that the party of Donald Trump has no place for you, then I invite you to learn more about Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party. Unlike MAGA Republicans, we are working to elect honest candidates who support policies that actually benefit families.”
